Taxes for Police Officers — Overtime, Details, and Retirement Timing
Most of an officer's tax picture is ordinary W-2 withholding. Two things aren't: income that arrives outside your regular check, and the retirement decisions whose tax consequences land decades later.
Detail or off-duty work paid by someone other than your department can arrive with nothing withheld at all, and it's still taxable.
The bigger money question is where your retirement income will be taxed — which depends heavily on where you live when you collect it.
Your reality
The parts of this topic that hit your trade differently — and that generic advice skips.
Outside detail income may arrive untaxed
Work paid directly by a private business or another agency may come with no withholding. That money is taxable, and discovering it in April is how a good year turns into a bill.
Overtime isn't taxed at a special penalty rate
A big overtime check can have more withheld because the payroll system treats it as if you earned at that rate all year. That's withholding, not a higher tax on overtime — it evens out when you file.
States treat public safety pensions differently
Some states exempt public pension income partly or entirely; others tax it as ordinary income. Where you retire can materially change what your pension is worth after tax.
First moves
Three concrete steps, in order. Each one is a brick laid.
Set aside a share of untaxed detail pay as it arrives
If nothing was withheld, move a portion to savings the same week. If this income is substantial and regular, ask a preparer whether you should be making estimated payments.
Choose traditional or Roth in your 457 deliberately
Traditional lowers taxable income now; Roth is taxed now and comes out tax-free later. Retiring early can mean lower-income years before other benefits start — which is context worth bringing to a preparer.
Check the pension tax rules where you plan to live
Before committing to a retirement state, look up how it treats public safety pension income. This is cheap to answer years early and expensive to discover after you've moved.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my overtime check get taxed so hard?
It usually isn't. Payroll withholds as though that pay rate continued all year, so a large check looks over-withheld. Your actual tax is settled when you file, and the excess comes back — the paycheck just looks worse than the reality.
Do I owe tax on off-duty detail work?
Yes. Income is taxable whether or not tax was withheld and whether or not a form arrives. If it's paid outside your department payroll, set some aside as you go rather than facing it in one lump.
Will my pension be taxed in retirement?
Federally, pension income is generally taxable. State treatment varies widely, and some states give public safety pensions favorable treatment. Ask your retirement system how your benefit is reported and check the rules where you intend to live.
